assumption

Taken for granted

An assumption is something taken for granted or accepted as true without proof: The plan rests on the assumption that costs will stay stable.

In logic and argument, assumptions are the unstated premises underlying a conclusion.

The assumption of a role or responsibility is the act of taking it on: her assumption of the presidency.

In Catholic doctrine, the Assumption refers to the Virgin Mary's bodily elevation to heaven, but lowercase assumption can describe any such taking up.

That's a big assumption to make.
