humanist
Renaissance scholar type
A humanist emphasizes human values, potential, and dignity over supernatural or divine authority.
The term applies to Renaissance scholars who revived classical learning, to secular thinkers who ground ethics in human welfare rather than religion, and more loosely to anyone with compassionate concern for humanity: a humanist approach to education, secular humanist philosophy.
