baste

Spoon over drippings

Baste has two unrelated meanings.

In cooking, to baste is to pour or brush liquid—melted butter, pan drippings, marinade—over meat while roasting to keep it moist: Baste the turkey every thirty minutes.

In sewing, to baste is to make long, loose stitches that temporarily hold fabric in place before permanent stitching: She basted the hem before running it through the machine.
