lignite

Low-grade fuel

Lignite is a soft, brownish-black coal—the lowest rank of coal, formed from peat under moderate pressure over millions of years.

It contains more moisture and less carbon than harder coals like bituminite or anthracite, making it less efficient as fuel.

Also called brown coal.

The power plant burned lignite mined from nearby deposits.
