crevasse

Deep ice split

A crevasse is a deep crack or fissure, especially in a glacier or ice sheet.

Crevasses form when ice moves over uneven terrain, creating gaps that can be hundreds of feet deep and sometimes hidden by snow bridges.

The word also applies to breaches in levees or riverbanks: The flood waters poured through a crevasse in the levee.

Distinguished from crevice, which is smaller and typically in rock.
