seadog
Grizzled ocean veteran
A seadog is an old or experienced sailor, someone whose years at sea have weathered them like driftwood.
The term carries affectionate respect for nautical skill gained through long service: The old seadog knew these waters better than anyone.
Also spelled sea dog.
