oxygen consumption
Aerobic metabolic demand
Oxygen consumption is the amount of oxygen used by an organism, tissue, or system over a given period.
In exercise physiology, it measures metabolic demand—how hard the body is working: Her oxygen consumption peaked during the final sprint.
VO₂ max, the maximum rate of oxygen consumption during intense exercise, is a standard measure of cardiovascular fitness.
The term also applies to industrial processes, aquatic ecosystems, and cellular respiration.
