cough

Sudden chest bark

Cough is both the verb for the sudden, noisy expulsion of air from the lungs—usually involuntary and often triggered by irritation or illness—and the noun for that sound or the condition causing it.

I couldn't stop coughing during the movie.

An engine or machine that sputters may also be said to cough.

To cough up is to expel something by coughing, or informally, to reluctantly produce something owed: He finally coughed up the money he borrowed.
