anoxia
Total oxygen deprivation
Anoxia is the complete absence of oxygen, particularly in body tissues or blood.
The brain is especially vulnerable—even brief anoxia can cause permanent damage or death.
The term applies both medically cerebral anoxia from cardiac arrest and environmentally anoxic dead zones in polluted waters where marine life cannot survive.
Compare hypoxia, which is reduced but not absent oxygen.
