radio beacon

Aerial location transmitter

A radio beacon is a transmitter that broadcasts a signal on a known frequency, allowing ships, aircraft, or other receivers to determine their position or direction relative to it.

Beacons may transmit continuously or at intervals, and some broadcast identifying codes.

The term extends to any fixed radio station used as a navigational reference point.
