lightship
Anchored warning vessel
A lightship is a vessel anchored in a fixed position to serve as a floating lighthouse, marking hazardous waters or guiding ships into harbor.
Before modern navigation technology, lightships warned mariners of shoals, reefs, and channel entrances where building a permanent lighthouse was impractical: The Nantucket lightship marked the approach to New York Harbor.
