A Fresnel lens is a flat optical lens made of concentric ridged sections, achieving the light-gathering power of a conventional curved lens while being much thinner and lighter.
Originally designed for lighthouses, Fresnel lenses now appear in overhead projectors, car headlights, and solar concentrators.
The design trades some image quality for dramatic reductions in weight and material.
