mayday

Emergency radio plea

Mayday is an international distress signal used by ships and aircraft in life-threatening emergencies: Mayday, mayday, we're going down.

The word comes from French *m'aider* (help me) and is always repeated three times in official protocol.

Figuratively, any desperate plea for help: She sent up a mayday when the project started falling apart. (Capitalized May Day is the spring holiday.)
