LORAN

Pre-GPS ship guidance

LORAN is a radio navigation system that allows ships and aircraft to determine their position by measuring the time difference between signals received from multiple fixed transmitters.

The name comes from "long range navigation." Developed during World War II, LORAN was largely superseded by GPS in the late twentieth century, though some backup systems remain operational.
