publican

British bar owner

A publican is someone who owns or manages a pub, the standard British term for the person behind the bar who runs the establishment.

In historical and biblical contexts, a publican was a tax collector—the sense familiar from the New Testament parable of the Pharisee and the publican.

The two meanings are unrelated: the pub sense comes from "public house."
