A bar tab is a running account of drinks ordered at a bar, paid at the end rather than with each round.
The bartender tracks what you owe: Put it on my tab.
To open a tab is to start one, usually by leaving a credit card; to close out is to settle up and leave.
Tabs allow social drinking without constant transactions.
