public school

Government-funded institution

A public school is, in the United States, a school funded by government and open to all students without tuition—the standard form of primary and secondary education.

In Britain, confusingly, a public school is an elite private boarding school like Eton or Harrow, so called because they historically admitted students from anywhere, not just a local parish.

Context usually makes the meaning clear: She attended public school in Ohio versus He was educated at public school in England.
