prefixes

Attached before roots

Prefixes are word elements attached to the beginning of a root to modify its meaning: un- reverses happy, pre- puts war before something, re- makes build happen again.

The term extends to any code or designation placed at the front: area code prefixes, title prefixes like Dr. or Ms.

To prefix something is to attach it at the beginning.
