preterite
Verb's past form
Preterite is the grammatical term for the simple past tense—the form of a verb indicating completed action: walked, sang, broke.
It contrasts with the present perfect (have walked) and past progressive (was walking).
The term appears mainly in formal grammar instruction and linguistics; most English speakers just call it the past tense.
