pre-
Comes before post-
Pre- is a prefix meaning before in time or position: preschool, pregame, prewar, prepay.
It attaches freely to nouns, verbs, and adjectives to indicate something happening earlier or coming in front of something else: pre-existing conditions, pre-approved credit.
The hyphen is optional in many combinations but standard before proper nouns pre-Columbian and in newer formations.
