suffixes

Endings of words

Suffixes are word endings that modify meaning or grammatical function.

Adding -ness to an adjective makes it a noun (sad becomes sadness); adding -ed to a verb makes it past tense.

English has dozens of common suffixes: -ing, -ly, -tion, -able, -ment, -ful.

The singular is suffix; as a verb, to suffix is to attach an ending to a word.
