preposition

Word showing relationship

A preposition is a function word, followed by a noun or noun phrase to form a prepositional phrase.

Many prepositions also function as other parts of speech, especially adverbs.

Most prepositions are short and consist of one word only, such as of, in, off, and with.

A few prepositions are longer and consist of phrases, such as according to, instead of, or alongside.
