antecedent

What came before

An antecedent is something that comes before—a precursor, predecessor, or prior event.

In grammar, the antecedent is the word a pronoun refers back to: in The dog wagged its tail, "dog" is the antecedent of "its." The plural antecedents often means ancestry or background: His antecedents were Welsh miners.

As an adjective, antecedent means preceding in time or order.
