namespace

Identifier isolation zone

A namespace is a container that holds a set of identifiers—names for variables, functions, or other elements—keeping them distinct from identical names elsewhere.

In programming, namespaces prevent collisions: two functions named "print" can coexist if they belong to different namespaces.

The concept extends to any system where names must be organized to avoid ambiguity: XML namespaces distinguish elements from different vocabularies, the DNS namespace organizes internet domain names.
