courtesy title
Polite name prefix
A courtesy title is an honorific or form of address used as a social convention rather than to indicate official rank or status.
Mr., Mrs., Ms., and Dr. are courtesy titles in everyday use.
The term also applies to titles given to family members of nobility who hold no title themselves: As the duke's younger son, he bears the courtesy title of Lord.
