annex

Seize foreign territory

Annex means to attach or add something to a larger entity, most commonly when a political power incorporates territory: Germany annexed Austria in 1938.

The noun annex (also spelled annexe in British English) refers to a building or section added to extend an existing structure, or a supplement to a document.

The library annex houses the rare book collection.

The verb carries connotations of unilateral action, often suggesting the absorbed party had little say in the matter.
