colon

List-introducing punctuation mark

A colon is the punctuation mark (:) used to introduce what follows—a list, an explanation, or an elaboration of what precedes it.

In biblical and time notation, colons separate chapter from verse and hours from minutes: John 3:16, 4:30 PM.

The other colon is the large intestine, the final section of the digestive tract leading to the rectum.
