turbinate

Coiled nasal structure

Turbinate describes something shaped like a spinning top or spiral scroll—coiled in a cone.

The term appears most often in anatomy, where the turbinate bones (or turbinates) are scroll-shaped structures inside the nasal cavity that warm and humidify inhaled air: Swollen turbinates can cause chronic nasal congestion.

In botany, turbinate describes top-shaped fruits or shells.
