weighting

Distributing relative significance

Weighting is the assignment of relative importance to items in a calculation or evaluation.

In statistics and surveys, different responses receive different weights based on their significance: The poll applied weighting to account for demographic imbalances.

A weighted average gives some values more influence than others.

In British usage, weighting also means an extra allowance added to salary, especially for employees in expensive areas: London weighting.
