pogroms

Organized ethnic violence

Pogroms are organized massacres or violent riots targeting a particular ethnic or religious group, historically and most commonly referring to attacks against Jewish communities in Russia and Eastern Europe during the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

The violence typically involved destruction of property, looting, and murder, often with the tacit approval or active encouragement of local authorities.

The pogroms of 1881 drove thousands of Jewish families to emigrate.

The term now applies more broadly to any systematic persecution of an ethnic minority.
