Pale of Settlement
Tsarist residential restriction
The Pale of Settlement was the western region of Imperial Russia where Jews were legally permitted to reside, from 1791 to 1917.
The area encompassed parts of present-day Poland, Lithuania, Belarus, Ukraine, and Moldova.
Jews faced restrictions on living outside the Pale, with limited exceptions for certain professions or wealth.
The term combines *pale* in its sense of a bounded territory with the bureaucratic language of official residence permits.
