slaughter

Butchery of many

Slaughter is the killing of animals for food, or the brutal killing of many people.

A slaughterhouse processes livestock; a battlefield slaughter leaves bodies strewn across the ground.

The verb means to kill in either sense: They slaughtered the hogs in November; Civilians were slaughtered by the advancing army.

In casual use, slaughter describes a crushing defeat: We got slaughtered in the playoffs.
