concentration camps

Mass imprisonment facilities

Concentration camps are detention facilities where people are confined without trial, typically under harsh conditions.

The term gained its darkest association with Nazi Germany's camps during World War II, where millions of Jews and others were imprisoned, subjected to forced labor, and systematically murdered.

The term now applies to any mass detention of civilians by a state: China's concentration camps for Uyghurs, the concentration camps on the southern border.

Such usage is often contested as either apt comparison or inappropriate hyperbole.
