ethnic cleansing
Forced demographic removal
Ethnic cleansing is the forced removal of an ethnic or religious group from a region through violence, terror, deportation, or murder.
The term emerged in the 1990s during the Yugoslav Wars but describes practices that have occurred throughout history.
Unlike genocide, which aims at extermination, ethnic cleansing focuses on expulsion—though the distinction often blurs in practice as mass killings frequently accompany forced displacement.
The UN documented evidence of ethnic cleansing in the region.
