scapegoating

Targeting the innocent

Scapegoating is the practice of blaming one person or group for problems caused by others or by circumstances beyond anyone's control.

The term comes from an ancient ritual in which a goat was symbolically loaded with the community's sins and driven into the wilderness.

Modern scapegoating typically targets vulnerable or marginalized groups: Immigrants are often scapegoated during economic downturns.

The scapegoat receives punishment or hostility that should be directed elsewhere—or nowhere at all.
