piton

Driven anchor point

A piton is a metal spike driven into rock cracks as an anchor point in climbing.

Pitons have an eye or ring at one end through which a rope can be threaded or a carabiner clipped.

Once essential equipment, they've largely been replaced by removable protection that doesn't scar the rock.

She hammered in a piton and clipped her rope to it.
