pitons

Crack-driven anchors

Pitons are metal spikes or pegs driven into rock cracks as anchors in climbing.

A piton has an eye or ring through which a rope can be threaded or a carabiner clipped.

Once essential equipment, pitons have largely been replaced by removable protection that doesn't scar the rock: The old route was marked by rusted pitons from decades past.
