first ascent
Mountain climbing debut
A first ascent is the initial successful climb of a mountain, peak, or route—the achievement of reaching a summit or completing a path that no one has climbed before.
In mountaineering, first ascents carry particular prestige: Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay made the first ascent of Everest in 1953.
The term extends to rock climbing routes: She claimed the first ascent of that face last summer.
