ground anchor
Soil-driven securing device
A ground anchor is a device driven or screwed into the earth to secure something in place—tents, fences, utility poles, or retaining walls.
Unlike anchors that grip by weight, ground anchors hold through friction or mechanical engagement with surrounding soil: The carnival workers drove ground anchors for the big top.
Also called an earth anchor.
