boat anchor
Seabed-gripping weight
A boat anchor is the heavy device lowered to the seafloor to keep a vessel in place.
In slang, it describes any piece of equipment—especially computers or electronics—that has become so obsolete or broken it's useless for its intended purpose: That old printer is just a boat anchor now.
