search and rescue
Finding missing people
Search and rescue is the coordinated effort to locate and extract people in distress—lost hikers, disaster survivors, victims of accidents.
Often abbreviated SAR, it encompasses specialized operations across terrain types: mountain search and rescue, maritime search and rescue.
Teams may include volunteers, military personnel, dogs, helicopters, and drones.
The coast guard launched a search and rescue mission after the boat capsized.
