sally

Sudden outward attack

Sally is a sudden rushing forth, especially a sortie by troops from a besieged position to attack the enemy: The garrison made a sally against the encircling forces.

By extension, a sally is any brief excursion or outing: a sally into town.

It also means a witty remark or outburst—a quick thrust in conversation: Her clever sallies kept the dinner party lively. (Capitalized Sally is a given name.)
