over
Across the top
As prepositions go, over is busier than most due to its broad range of meanings.
When space is the subject, over can mean across or above, or both: a picture over the fireplace, carpets over the floors.
In relation to time, over conveys duration: We got to know each other over a period of weeks.
Figurative meanings of over also vary widely: We talked about it over dinner. I would take green over pink. They paid over a million dollars for their house.
Over can also function as an adverb and an adjective, again with myriad meanings.
