beneath
At lower level
Like its near synonyms below and under, beneath is both a preposition and an adverb.
It is less frequent and somewhat more literary than under, and also more limited in its range of meanings.
Beneath has one use for which its synonyms cannot substitute, such as unworthy of (She regards the faculty as being far beneath her).
