homefront
Civilians during war
The homefront is the civilian population and domestic activities of a nation during wartime, as distinct from the military front where combat occurs.
The term emerged during World War I when total war demanded civilian contributions—rationing, factory work, bond drives: Women entered the workforce in unprecedented numbers on the homefront.
It implies that civilians too are engaged in the war effort, just on different terrain.
