newsreel

Theater current events

A newsreel was a short film of news and current events, shown in cinemas before the main feature.

From the early twentieth century until television news became dominant in the 1960s, newsreels were how most people saw footage of wars, political events, sports, and celebrities.

The term now evokes the grainy black-and-white footage and dramatic narration style characteristic of that era.

The documentary included newsreel footage from World War II.
