intermission

Mid-show break

An intermission is a pause or break in the middle of something, especially a scheduled break during a performance: We got drinks during the intermission.

The word appears most often in theatrical contexts—plays, concerts, operas—where audiences need time to stretch or use the restroom.

Outside entertainment, intermission suggests any temporary cessation: a brief intermission in the rain.
