nares

Holes for breathing

Nares is the plural of naris, the technical term for a nostril—an opening in the nose through which air passes.

The word appears almost exclusively in medical and anatomical contexts: The physician examined both nares for signs of obstruction.

In zoology, nares describes the nasal openings in birds, reptiles, and other animals.
