whiff

Barely detectable odor

A whiff is a brief smell carried on the air: I caught a whiff of perfume as she passed.

By extension, a whiff is any slight trace or hint: a whiff of scandal, a whiff of desperation.

In baseball, to whiff is to swing and miss—three whiffs and you've struck out.

The verb also means to smell briefly: He whiffed the milk to check if it had gone bad.
