nostrils
Nose's twin holes
Nostrils are the two external openings of the nose, through which air passes for breathing and smelling.
The word usually appears in plural since they come in pairs: Her nostrils flared with anger.
Flaring nostrils signal strong emotion—rage, fear, or arousal.
Animals with prominent nostrils may have them described: The horse's nostrils steamed in the cold air.
